Write In Your Best Condition

I got home last night with one thing in my mind: to write. Having been fully immersed in work the entire week, I was happy that I could finally be able to set free the overflowing ideas in my mind. I was back in my sanctuary. So, I began typing on the keyboard.

Unfortunately, the physical exhaustion has affected my writing capabilities.

My fingers were stuck at the home keys, my eyes began closing, my head started dropping. I tried to fight it, but failed. I arrived at a conclusion: I was physically tired.

And there was no sense of forcing something that has no power.

Strength

So I asked myself: should I continue just for the sake of writing despite my temporary incapability? If so, shouldn’t I be worried that I might sabotage my post?

My main objectives for having a blog are 1.) to express myself, and 2.) share my thoughts, opinions, and observations with others. Writing unsatisfactorily would be a shame and a disrespect to myself and to my readers.

With that in mind, I made a decision: I turned the machine off, took a break and then slept.

Now - fresh and recharged - I am reminded of basketball players when they are not healthy. Basketball is a physical game, and an injured player is not allowed to play until he is 100% healthy or cleared by the team doctor (some exceptions apply).

The risk of aggravating the injury is simply too high if a player forces the issue. Besides, will he be able to give something of significance given his limitations?

Same goes with writers and bloggers.

A writer should also rest if he needs to, because just like athletes, he should be in his excellent physical condition to bring out the best in him.

      I agree with you Saedel; it is definitely better to provide the content when your mind is refreshed and ready to work.

      HOWEVER, I must say that I have turned out several blogs when I was on my last leg. I do the majority of my bloggin’ late at night, just like I am now, but I am still fully functional in turning out my work. To be quite honest with you, I wouldn’t know if I would provide any better content if I were running on “all cylinders”; I truly do not think I would be able to recognize the difference. I am one of these types where even if I am tired, if I have some content to get out, then I will stay up that extra some-odd minutes to finish the work.

      I guess I am different than the average blogger, or perhaps I am not and I am just admitting my abilities to work no matter what. I do not encourage this behavior and each blogger should do what is going to be better for their blog at the end of the day.

      Great post bro.

      Hi Saedel,

      Last nite i was planning to write another post, but mentally i felt very tired.Because on Thursday night i injured my right leg while playing Football and i could not sleep well. The bed thing is Saturday mornings i usually run with my best friends. If you regularly do sports, you prepare yourself for at least 4-5 blog posts a week. Our brain consumes 30% of our oxygen intake, and outdoor sport acvities are the best to keep our physical and mental conditions at its best. Having said that, just be careful not to injure yourself. It is very painful :)
      As a former amateur basketball player, i must say that Basketball is both physical and mental game. Look at NBA players, some weeks they play 5 games in 7 days! Without mental preparation, your body can not cope with that. What i mean by mental preparation is dreaming about the NBA championship title. Similar to a basketball players mental preparation, i do have a mental preparation for blogging. I want to see me and my friends (like you) over the top, quit my daily job, earn a good living by blogging. So, sometimes i feel so tired but those big dream pops up in my mind and i force myself to accomplish the tasks i planned. While writing i ve just wondered about your big dream ? What drives you to write?

      Great analogy to the basketball players.

      Which reminds me - you asked why I didn’t mention basketball in my “seven things” post the other day. I don’t follow that sport at all. Mainly this is because when I was a kid, in school, we had no gymnasium, thus no basketball. I never learned anything at all about the game so I developed no interest in it as a result. (Not that I played football but we did have a football field and a team and of course, I learned to follow the game from the bystander’s perspective while in school.

      Thanks for the try to help me find out about that blogger. With the information you found I will try to contact several from her blogroll to see if any of them know what happened that her blog was taken down, etc.

      @Marcus
      Completely agree with you, bro. And I understand. People are unique, and one method might not be applicable to others. Bloggers have got to do what’s best for them. Btw, I enjoyed reading your 25 Ways To Stop Thinking article. *thumbsup*

      @Mert
      Wow, you’re an NBA fan! What’s your fave team? You posed an insightful questions at the end of your comment which made me stop and ponder….

      @Jeni
      Thanks! Too bad you don’t follow basketball. It’s easy to learn, really. Btw, I hope you’ll be able to contact that blogger.

      i can write when i’m physically tired as long as i’m so inspired with a topic. it happened to me several times already and despite longing to have a good night sleep, i was still able to do a piece before hitting the sack.

      and by the way one rule that never fails is “never write when you’re angry”. this will just ruin everything…and most likely you’ll regret writing (and blogging) the very next day.
