What Is Your Strongest Point?

During one of our ice breaker games when I was at the end of my teenage years, a friend gave me a question: “What is your strongest point?” that made me think hard.

Usually, one would answer that by giving his or her positive attitudes that s/he possesses: one would say “honesty”, or “humility”, or maybe “good looks”. But I feel staying within the territory of the clichè, will only keep you into the thick of typicality. One should aspire to be the cream that rises to the top.

So I answered, “My strongest point is knowing my weaknesses and doing something about it.” I believe knowing your weaknesses will open a lot of rooms for improvement and will bring you up to another level of self esteem. Confident people look for their weaknesses and turn them to opportunities to improve themselves.

Twelve years later, I realize it is easier said than done. My strongest point needs more polishing. :D

Slider K2 Rolling Archive Problem: Finally Solved!

My slider (the thing that moves the page from older to newer and vice versa) was not showing up when I first installed K2 theme, and it took me a long (I mean long) while before I was able to finally solve it.

I tried going to different sites for solutions, but nothing came close. I even downloaded and activated Michael’s Rolling Archive but it gave me a fatal error and I had to delete the entire rollingarchive folder from the site to fix it. I wanted to give up, but deep inside, I had this feeling that the solution for the invisible slider is simple, I just couldn’t knock it down.

And then it hit me. Upon comparing the codes from other sites, the cause of problem appeared right before my eyes: my K2 folder contained space in between. The solution? Delete the space and off you go!
exhibit 1.

[Previous Folder] ————-[Process] ——————–[New Folder]
K2 v096 ———- —————delete space ——————— K2v096

Here’s the step by step process, in case the above exhibit isn’t clear:

  1. On your site, make sure that the K2 Rolling archives folder is deleted
  2. Find your K2 folder and make sure you delete all the spaces of the folder
  3. Upload the K2 Rolling archive folder at the PLUGIN Directory, BUT DO NOT activate it!

That’s it! For those who are still searching, hope you stumble upon this post and I hope this helps.

On Joining School Organizations

This was in Manila, Philippines. The year was 1993. It was the first day of my college life when I saw the poster in the booth of Midshipmen (that’s what we call college level Reserves) Naval Officership that said “Scholarship” as one of their benefits. As a person who always wanted to help my parents financially, I joined the organization eventhough “being a soldier” is not my strongest point. The “scholarship” was my main motivation.

We were thirteen in the batch. After grueling months of rigorous training, only six made it to the Corpse and I was ranked 5th. I knew I was the lousiest in the group as it is not my cup of tea. As a result, I took a lot of criticism from upperclassmen who I thought didn’t like me from the very start. The first few days of being an officer, I learned that the scholarship was not an automatic benefit. You have to prove you’re worth it by also excelling in class. And I didn’t think that way before I joined the Corpse. I never thought there was a catch.

Needless to say, I didn’t enjoy my time as a Midshipmen Naval Officer. There were certain philosophies I didn’t agree with and I had a lot of doubts. I started avoiding the Corpse by walking away from places around the campus I knew they’d be hanging out. But they had ways of tracking you down so I started cutting classes, and worst, it came to the point where I was not attending the classes anymore. My academics suffered tremendously. My self-esteem was at the rock bottom and I was extremely lonely. My ultimate objective of getting a scholarship, gone. So I decided to quit.

Few months later, I discovered the Chess club. Now chess is the game I knew I would excel in. I’ve been playing it since I was six, and when I was growing up, I played with people even older than I was in the streets. So I joined and made it to the chess team, and guess what? They provided scholarship for the players! I was happy again because I found what I wanted without even looking for it. Or should I say, it found me?

So I’d like to share personal insights that I learned from this experience. Below are five quick pointers on or before joining school organizations. Remember, these are based on personal experience, so use them or not, it’s totally up to you:

  • Join a group with activities you love doing - If you’re a techie person, Computer Club is for you. Don’t join the Writers’ Guild if you want to learn how to write. They want people who are ready to contribute.
  • Academics should be your number one priority - You are in school to learn, keep that in mind. The only way to stay in a club you like is to stay in the school and do good. That is why school clubs and organizations are called extra-curricular activities.
  • Ask questions - Clubs are friendliest during recruitment process. So take advantage and ask questions you need answers to without being annoying. It’s your chance to know the pre-requisites if you want to avail of the club benefits before reaching the point of no return. Be cautious of clubs that offer too-good-to-be-true gimmicks.
  • Do Some Random Survey. Ask family members and close friends what they think about of you joining a specific group. Did they join clubs before? How did it affect their lives? Gather as much information. You’ll be amazed by the things you’ll learn from others’ history.
  • Invite friends to join you. Imagine this: you got accepted in a club, and a general meeting was held. You found out you knew nobody and you sat in one corner, too shy to speak out. You’re beginning to feel uncomfortable and now having second-thoughts if you made the right decision. Before that happens, invite friends to join you in the club. You don’t want to be in an island alone. That was why I dropped a famous computer club in our school and favored to stay in Students Assistant Organization where we have a family-like atmosphere. As a bonus, we’re getting paid doing the job we love.

If you have pointers and tips you want to share, feel free to post them here at the comment box.

Perfume as a Gift

Few years ago, a friend wanted to give his special someone a perfume as a gift. He knew I wear different brands of perfume everyday (exagerration :P ) so he thought he came to the right person. So here are practical tips before you buy perfume as a gift:

My Perfumes

My perfumes (L-R): CK in2U HIM, Guess, Kiehl’s Original Musk Blend No. 1

  • Get something based on his/her personality. If s/he is the sporty-type, get something for active people. If s/he’s a workaholic, buy something that’s suitable for office. Remember, perfume is something people “wear”, so give something they can wear appropriately for the occasion.
  • Consider the age. Is the scent appropriate for his/her age? You don’t want to give your 25-year old hip girlfriend something that a 50-year old woman wears. (no pun intended)
  • Size matters. If you’re giving someone a perfume s/he’s never worn before, try the smallest first. You’ll never know if it is right for his/her body chemistry. It’s not really practical to give huge perfume only to be shelved because s/he doesn’t like the scent. Plus, buying small perfume will save you some bucks.
  • It’s not for you. This is a common mistake for buyers and sometimes I’m guilty of it, too. We smelled something nice from another friend and we thought the same perfume is going to match our special someone’s taste. Remember, it’s not about what you choose for him/her, it’s about what s/he likes. You’re not the one wearing the perfume anyway. (On a personal note: If you’re thinking of giving me a perfume, DRAKKAR NOIR is not for me :P )

Once you have decided what to buy, remember to ask the salesperson for promotional perfumes (small vials) so you have ideas if you plan to buy again. If you intend to buy new perfume online and you still haven’t smelled it yet, be sure to check customer reviews first.

By the way, after giving the perfume don’t be shy to ask him/her is s/he’s using it. Get his/her opinion on the scent. It will help you on your future purchase.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Remember to Thank

You are an active member of a forum, or a regular visitor of a blog. Then somebody greeted you a happy birthday (either in shout or in thread). Now everyone knows it’s your special day and they started greeting you.

Remember to thank these people. They took time off so return the favor by thanking them and saying you appreciate their efforts no matter how small or big it is for you. Sometimes, things like these go unnoticed because we take them for granted.

So to all the people who greeted me on my birthday, thank you very much! It may sound cheesy, but if you ever read this post, I want you to know that I appreciate that you remember my special day.

PS. It’s never too late to send me present. :P
